Are you ready for the Rugby World Cup?

The Rugby World Cup kicks off this friday at Twickenham, where the hosts England will look to take on Fiji in what promises to be a great start to the tournament.

This is a perfect chance for you to bring the playground discussion into the classroom and here at Sportplan, we have some ideas of how best to get your pupils inspire by the Rugby World Cup!

Maths:

In Rugby union there are three ways to score; 5 points for a try, 2 points for a conversion and 3 points for a drop goal.

What combinations can be used to get the following? Remember you can not have more conversions than tries.

  • 13 - 1 Try, 1 Conversion, 2 Drop Goals
  • 32 - 5 Trys, 2 Conversions, 1 Drop Goal
  • 68 - 9 Trys, 7 Conversoins, 3 Drop Goals

Science:

Newton's Laws of Physics

Geography:

There are six continents represented in the Rugby World Cup - Oceania (5), Europe (8), South America (2), North America (2), Africa (2) and Asia (1).

Can your students work out which country belongs to which continent?

Modern Foreign Languages:

The following languages are the primary languages of the 20 competing world cup teams, can your students identify what language is spoken by what country?

English (9), Fijian (1), Spanish (2) Samoan (1), Japanese (1), Tongan (1), Georgian (1), French (1), Italian (1), Romanian (1)
